Children #10 of Martin Rott and Catharina Sauter
Joseph and Christina (Kessler) Rott

Joseph Rott Sr. was born in 1852 in Glueckstal, South Russia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rott.  In 1878 he was united in marriage to Christina Kessler.  The Rotts, along with their children, immigrated to America in 1889 and came to Eureka, SD.  They lived there for a short time and then took up homestead eight miles southwest of Streeter, which is now the Bert Spitzer farm.

The Rott family experienced the hardships common to early settlers including some wonderful crops.  In one instance, the grocer gave the Rotts enough flour for the winter because they did not have enough food.  With no meat available,  they lived on foods made with flour and potatoes.

They built their house of wood obtained from Dawson, [each]...trip took two days.  On another occasion, they made a trip to Jamestown, with oxen, their only means of transportation.  On the way the oxen stopped, and would not move until Mr. Rott tied green corn in front of the oxen just out of their reach.  They continued coaxing them in this manner until they reached their destination.

In 1890 the Rotts became members of the Seventh Day Adventists Church, which they faithfully attended until their death.

In 1919 they sold their farm and moved to Napoleon where they resided until 1935 when they moved to Lodi, CA.  There were fourteen children born to this union, three of which died in Russia:  Joseph, Bismarck; Jacob, David, Mrs. Jacob (Christina) Suelzle, Dan, Mrs. Gilbert (Martha) Ringering, Nathaniel, all of Lodi, CA; Mrs. Jacob (Louise) Horse, Jamestown, ND; Sam, Salem, OR; Mrs. San (Ida) Goebel, Lehr, ND.

Mr. Rott died at the age of 91 and Mrs. Rott died in 1948.  Both are buried in the Lodi Cemetery. Martha Ringering and Nathaniel are the only children still living.
