Stories of Supernatural and Witchcraft told by German-Russians, their Ancestors and their Descendants

witch, bat, cat

The following story is an excellent example of what people saw for the first time an unknown phenomena and because of their first experience,   fear shook their minds, bodies and  souls.

A Trip To Glen Ulin

" This story is about Grandpa Reimann and another neighbor and a trip they made to Glen Ulin for supplies when they first came to North Dakota. They went together because of the distance, and because stealing was a major problem. They would make their purchases and at the last moment load the wagon and head for home. As night fell, they saw a glow in the distance and believed it to be a prairie fire. They were very concerned about their families and their homestead. As it grew darker the sky looked like it was on fire and it frightened them. They decided the world was coming to an end and they went to Heart Butte and prayed all night. You probably deduced that it was the Northern Lights they had witnessed. Grandpa said they laughed about that many times over the years.
