Researching Sauter Family

Catharina, nee Sauter, Rott's family background is unknown at this time, however, there were other Sauters listed in various records of those who migrated to Russia and in various villages near Glueckstal / Od. S. russia where Catharina m. Martin Rott II.  They are:
.NOTE:

Was Catherine, nee Sauter, Rott  possibly the  granddaughter of Joseph Sauter b. abt 1760 and Katharina ____ who migr. to Rosental / Crimea in 1806;  listed as migr. from Muelhausen / Heidelberg, Baden.

In a message dated 5/14/03 3:08:25 PM, aubmarth@jetstream.net writes:

<< I just happened upon your Martin Rott II - Catharina Sauter genealogy.  I do note you suggested [poss. dau. of_____}: I doubt that there was a Catharina in the family you have tried to unite into the Rott family, but I think you have the incorrect lady. The family from Rosental was not SAUTER, but rather they were SAUTNER, almost all were Catholic, almost all remained in Rosental, Crimea [this was the focus of my search when I happened upon you Rott family] Inasmuch as I have researched the Sautner family because my own great grandmother was one, I know of no Catharina [Katharina/Katerina] born around 1803.

I think you can find many Sauters in the Glückstal colonies of Russia.

Stumpp bkKarl Stumpp's  Book: THE EMIGRATION FROM GERMANY TO RUSSIA IN THE YEARS 1763 to 1867

A marvelous annd necessary book for those of us researching our German-Russian roots.  It can be purchased through AHSGR or GRHS or GRHC book stores.  Go to their site and their book store is on their Home Pages.

  • Introduction page 13 which includes history of the German migration to Russia
  • Page 46 is where the different German villages known to have had Germans who migrated to Russia
  • Pages on early migration 1763 begins on page 66.
  • Page 85  begins to talk about Bessarabia and list colonies.
  • Pages 100-101 show maps of various palces German emigration of Germans into Russia took place.
  • Volga Lists start on page 117
  • List of Mennonitens page 166 begins.

The question is: Are any of the Sauters listed in the Stumpp Book the family of Catharine Sauter?  None of those listed state they settled in Glueckstal / Od. where her husband, Martin Rott, had settled with his family in 1812.  We do find the families by the name of Sauter in the St. Petersburg Archive Extractions.  Three of the larger Evangelisch colonies founded around Glueckstal / Odessa S. Russia were:
  • Bergdorf
  • Neudorf
  • Kassel
  • Hoffnungstal / Od was farther away, east of Kassel.

There is a long list but done mentioned having been born, lived or died in Glueckstal area accept Catharina. So, we need to look farther away and probably south of Hoffnungstal to other Evangelisch colonies near Odessa.  Those mentioned are:

  • Friedenstahl/Bess
  • Alt Postal/Bess
  • Borodino/Bess.
  • Kloestitz/Bess.
  • Friedental/Od
  • Gueldendorf / Od
  • Johannesthal /Od
  • Waterloo / Od.
  • Dennewitz / Bess.
  • Mannsburg / __
  • Eigenfeld / __
  • Worms/ Od.
  • Annenthal / __
  • Wittenberg / Bess.
  • Kulm / Bess.
  • Rohrbach / Od.
  • Neu Cassel/ __
  • Paulsthal / __
  • others?

It would make the research easier if the list was shorter but there is quite a long list.  So, it's back the list of the original list.  Is there a child Catherine listed with any of them?

In Gueldendorf/ Od. #93 founded in 1830 [dates too late to include Catherina Sauter]  there is only mention of two men, probably brothers, Johannes and Andreas Sautter from Willmandingen / Reutlingen-Wu in 1817

In Gross Liental [Grossliebental] / Od., founded in 1803-4,  #192 under Georg Walter is metnioned his step-son Eberhard Sauter, age 9.  No Catharina. is listed .  There is, also, mentioned a Georg Sauter #192 who is apparently linked to Georg Walter's wife. A child? A brother? A father? I don't know.

Friedental/ Od, founded in 1805, . and Alt Postal/ Bess., founded in 1823, seem to have cross-overs. One was Georg Sauter b. 8  March 1777  Sulz/ Horb, Wu. and his wife Christina Heizel b. abt 1778 Grosssachsenheim / Ludwigsburg-Wu.  List states they migr. in 1817 to Alt-Postal then to Friedenstal. So, where did they live from 1817 to 1823? ......  Perhaps the places are reverse and should read Friedental to Aly Postal.  Let me see first if there is a Catharina attached to their section. Trouble is Georg and is wife Christine are not mentioned in Alt-Postal or Friedental or Gross Liebental, unless one assumes the Georg Sauter linked to #192 is the same person.

The market town of Taurtino / Bess has listed two Sauer men. See above.  They are probably father and son. I don't know if Sauer and Sauter names can be linked.

So, let me look at the names on the Archive list and see if I can't find the children or the death of any Georg Sauters.

Apparently Georg Sauters b. 1777 d. 27 Jan 1852 Alt Postal and his wife Christina __NN__ d. 25 Sept 1854 Alt Postal and it states she was born in Grosszachter, Wu and her maiden name was Heitzel. Doesn't state year of birth in this record.

Addition from Steve Mogck:  Johann Georg Sauter b. 3 Aug 1777 Sulz / Horb, Wuerttemberg d. 27 Jan 1852 Alt Posttal / Bess. S. Russia m. Christina Regina Heizel b. Jan 1778 Grossachsenheim / Ludwigsberg, Wuerttemberg  Issue:

  1. Karolina Sauter b. 1806 Neu Sulzfeld/ Poland
  2. Anna Maria Sauter b. 11 May 1817 Wittenberg/ Bess. s. Russia
  3. Martin Sauter b. 8 Nov 1820 Sakowitz/ Poland

It appears Georg and Christian migr. to Alt Postal from Friedental / Od., or, so it seems to me.

So, let me dig around Friedental / Od. in the Archival Records. No Catharina found....

>>Sauter/Sautter arrived in South Russia in 1819; later settle in Gueldendorf/ Odessa; family recods found by Curt Renz both in Willmandingen / Reutlingen Oberamt, Wuerttemberg and in Kirchardt / Sinsheim Amt, Baden.  The GCRA book has some additional infomration on this family.<< Datea foun at http://www.ahsgr.org/GO/goSa.htm

Back to the Digital Library, which is a place filled with important information for German-Russian researchers. This time I clicked on GEDCOM Listings. I found fourteen people who had listings of different Sauter families.  It was on A. Brosz Gedlist of Alt-Postal I discovered: Catharina Sauter b. 13 March 1811 Neu-Sulzfeld. However, I assume this is a Catholic community since Sulzfeld was.... As far as I know, Catherine was probably Evangelican Lutheran as was her husband Martin Rott.

It appears that Catharina, nee Sauter, Rott's family isn't going to be an easy find. If anyone out there has any infomration please contact me:

While working on my Borodoino / Bess GR village project,  I discovered the following information.

Jakob Kuest b. 11 Dec 1835 Kloestitz/ Bess m. 9 Octt 1858 Kloestitz/ Bess to widow Christine, nee Walther, Sauter  b. 8 Jan 1828 Kassel, Od., . Kherson, Russia, dau. of Johann Konrad Walther (b. 10 Feb 1806 Ohrnberg/ __, Wuerttemberg) and Anna Johanna Wetzler / Wentzler (b. 1806 in Warsaw /Warsaw, Poland [NOTE:  Christine's first husband was Leonhard Sauter b. 10 Jn 1823 Rohrbach / Poland d. 15 Sept 1849 Kloestitz.  No children are listed]  Issue:

  1. XXXXX (see family in detail by following the link of Jakob Kuest)

I t was not uncommon for the the two villages, Borodino and Kassel, to find  marriageable partners since a great number of them were originally from Wuerttemberg area.

The other reason I took notice is my ancestor Barbara Wetzler b. 17 June 1848 Neudorf/ Od m. J. Georg Dockter.  Neudorf is next to Kassel.   Their daughter Katrina Dockter b. 4 Feb 1878 Neudorf married into the Hoffer family, also.  She became the wife of Friedrich Hoffer.  They are my great grandparents.  Wetzlers migr. fr Gaertringen / Boblingen, Wuerttemberg.  And, like the Sauter stayed for a time in Poland before they continued to the Odessa area of S. Russia.  However, they may have been pushed out of the Alsace area during the French invasions, which was before the French Revolution and Napoleon's rise to power.
