  1. "Jacob Gaupp (Gaub)was born in Markgroningen / Ludwigsburg in Wuerttemberg, Germany in 1877.  His wife was Johanna Lauz.  At the very onset of the migration from Germany to Russia late in 1804, the Jacob Gaupp family was one of three families who were directed by the Russian government to the Black Sea area to the Armenian village of Grigoriopol.  Shortly after, all the Germans who had come to this village were relocated in Glinoi, which, now, became entirely a German village.  It had been vacated of all its former inhabitants.  It took on the German name of Gluckstal." [Glueckstal/Odessa, S. Russia].

His great-grandson, Christoph I, married Christina Hidle of Gluckstal.  She was the daughter of John Georg, born in Germany.  Ten children were born to this union, of whom Christoph II, Gottlieb, Joseph and Johann were the youngest.  These four brothers came to America.  Christoph and his brother Gottlieb were carpenters and wagoners (makers of wagons).  Times were very bad and they sometimes sold personal possessions in order to live.  Russia no longer adhered to the former promises she had made to the German colonists.  The four brothers saw a more secure future for themselves in America where relatives were already well established."

ANSWER FROM TSTANGLSR

<<Maurice:

Just a bit more GAUB information, assuming that your "Carrie" Caroline Gaub is descended from the Gaub family of Glueckstal, Odessa, South Russia. I have researched the Gaub family back to Markgroeningen, Wuerttemberg, Germany. I have the Markgroeningen microfilms on indefinite loan at a local LDS Family History Center.

In Markgroeningen the family name was usually spelled GAUPP. The family emigrated to South Russia in 1804. The Glueckstal immigrant Johann Jakob GAUB (Gaupp) [b ca 1766 Beutelsbach, Schorndorf, Wue., son of Johann Andreas Gaupp, Weingaertner in Beutelsbach], married in Markgroeningen on 26 Jul 1797, to Johanna Eberhardina LAUX [born 24.6.1773 Markgroeningen], who died in Galatz [on the lower Danube River] enroute to Russia. This couple had one son in Markgroeningen, Johann Friedrich [b 31 Oct 1797, died 1856], who married Katharina Margaretha Wittich [b ca 1797 Peterwardein, Prussia, d 26 Nov 1859 Glk] in Glueckstal, probably ca 1819-1820.

In 1804 the route to South Russia from Wuerttemberg was to Ulm, Germany; then down the Danube River on "Ulmer Schachtel" boats to Galatz, where they left the River to be held in "quarantine" [really just until they paid a ransom] by the local Turkish Sultan [many died there] before being allowed to travel overland through Bessarabia to near Akkermann where they crossed the Dnjestr River Limon [bay] on small boats, continuing overland to Odessa City. These early colonists were held in Odessa for up to two years before being assigned to colonies. The earliest "Glueckstal colonists" were first quartered in Grigoriopol, upstream on the Dnjestr River from Odessa City, ca 1805-1806. In 1808 & 1809 these colonists were moved to Glueckstal, Bergdorf, Neudorf & Kassel, colonies newly established to "swap" Armenian villagers with the German colonists, who were not "getting along" in Grigoriopol.

Johann Jakob Gaub [1766] remarried to Johanna Katharina STAUSS [b 11 Jun 1785 Markgroeningen, d 4 Oct 1844] after arrival in South Russia--possibly while still in Odessa City, but may be in Grigoriopol [first known child was born in 1807]. The Stauss family also came from Markgroeningen in 1804, with the Gaub family and many other families from Markgroeningen, most of whom settled in the German colony of Glueckstal. It appears that Johann Jakob Gaub died ca 1849 [no death record, no mention in 1858 Glk Revision List], since Johanna Katharina Stauss' 1844 death record indicates that she was married, wife of Jakob Gaub.

One branch of the Gaub family in Glueckstal is related to my wife, Janice Huber Stangl, through an Opp/Ladner family. Until we can identify your Carrie's parents, I do not know whether you might be descended from the Gaub/Opp (Ladner) branch.

Regards, Tom Stangl >>
