Arlin Adam's '48 Chevy

Story by Mike Sullivan

Photographed by Clyde Ehrhardt

This week's car is Arlin Adam's sleek little '48 Chevy.  The first things you will notice about this car as it drives up is the Prussian Blue paint job, and the lowering of the front and rear of 3 inches, and maybe some will notice the molding of the hood and deck.

But as you take a closer look, you will notice the detailed molding of all excess chrome, air vent, and aerial.  Looking further, you will notice the Frenched in taillights and the chroming of all the window frames.

When you open the door, you will notice all blue and white Naugahyde upholstery, with a rolled package deck.  After you finish scanning the interior you will want to look under the smooth hood. Under there the first thing you will notice will be the two carburetors on top of a '53 Chevy mill, in which 3/4 cam lurks within.  And it is also equipped with dual pipes for easier breathing.

Arlin's little car is for show and go.  His future plans are to chrome the motor and upholster the trunk and put in rugs. Arlin is also a member of the new car club, "THE CASUALS".

Chevy 57

Don is my  [Judy A. Remmick-Hubert's]

cousin and was Arlin's best friend. Don named his son Arlin.

Remarks from Remmick-Hubert:  Had to dig out my book on cars to see why the 1957 Chevrolet was so popular in our time. Says here that the company developed the first engine with  a 1 hp/cu in for the 57 Chevy.  Plus I think everyone like it's lines..... .
Other cars and classmates to remember:

Robert Lipelt's  1931 Ford

Herb Quenzer's 1950 Chevy

From Rita Henry (Rott) who received it from friends Ken and Jan Wright:

Good Morning-- If you are one of those with the sound turned off, turn it on and live. And if you're too young to understand any of the following, too bad, the fiftys were nifty.

Subject: 57 CHEVY - Sit Back and Enjoy!!!!!!

Remember when......?

Turn on your sound and remember. . . . You'll enjoy this one. OK, so some

of you might have been too young to remember . . . . enjoy the music anyway.

REMEMBER....

When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms,  flunk a test or chew gum. And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we  danced to a juke box later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns and  the boys wore suits for the first time and we were allowed to stay out till 12 p.m.

When a '57 Chevy was everyone's dream car. . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class  ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger.

And no one ever asked where the car keys were 'cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key.

Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like "That cloud looks like a..."

And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group learning experience-it was a game.

Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals 'cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger.

And...with all our progress...don't you just wish...just once...you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace...and share it with the children of the 80's and 90's...

So send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger,

The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!

And was it really that long ago?

Me

Judy A. Remmick-Hubert with my 56 Chevy,

Berkeley Hills, above UC campus

This car was a "gutless wonder", a Straight-6, white and turquoise, well worn seats, guzzled too much oil but had four good tires and it got me where I wanted to go.  Unlike the guys,  I never looked under hood [remember the gas attendants use to check all that stuff under the hood and even added air to the tires], or thought about making her faster. I may have kicked the tires but out of anger.... not to prove anything about the car.  She did have a name but at this point in time [having a senior moment], I don't recall what it was.

This car became ours  [my husband Garry's and mine] in 1961 and it took us to many places and adventures until we sold it to my cousin Darrel Dobler in the summer after Garry graduated from Boalt Law School, Berkeley in 1968.
