Notes for Johann Peter PFAFF

BAPTISM

Witnesses at the baptism of Johann Peter were: (1) Johann Peter Pfaff, father's brother and son of Conrad, from Falkenstein; (2) Maria Magdalena, mother's sister and daughter of Johannes Closs.

IMMIGRATION

According to "Quellen zur Deutschen Siedlungsgeschichte in Sudosteuropa", Peter 'Paff' passed through Vienna on 30 Apr 1784 on his way to Hungary. He was travelling with one other person from Moersfeld.

CENSUS

According to Stumpp, Peter Pfaff went to Torschau, Hungary, in 1784. Then in 1806 he went to Russia, as follows (1816 census):

Peter Pfaff 60

Christina 44

Johann 20

Margaretha 16

Elisabetha 14

Karolina 9

A son Philipp had gone to Peterstal in 1811 at age 19.

The Liebental District Odessa 1812 Census lists the following:

Peter Pfaff 52

wife Christina 46

son Johann 19

daughter Margaretha 14

daughter Elisabetha 11

daughter Karolina 6

Peter had 4 horses, 4 cattle, 1 wagon, 1 plow and 1 harro.

Obviously, there is quite a bit of conflict with ages given in these two census years.

OCCUPATION

In Russia, Peter was a Bauer (farmer).

Notes for Christina (---)

SOURCES

In the 1812 Census for Freudental her age is given as 46. In the 1816 Census by Stumpp her age is given as 44. No death records appear after 1833, so she must have died between 1816-1833.

Children of Johann Peter PFAFF and Christina (---) were as follows:

i Philipp PFAFF, born 25 Aug 1790 in Burg Kessel, Batschka, Hungary; died 10 Aug 1876 in Hoffnungsburg, Odessa, So. Russia.

SOURCE The 1816 Census by Stumpp says that Philipp went to Peterstal in 1811 at the age of 19. Philipp, age 21, appears in the 1812 Census in Peterstal as living with his in-laws, Georg and Maria Hirsch. In the 1858 Census for Peterstal, Philipp's age is given as 66. Thus, all censuses suggest a birth date of about 1791/1792. [His age at death suggests a birth date of 1 Sep 1788.]

ii Johannes PFAFF, born 29 Apr 1793 in Torschau, Batschka, Hungary; died 10 Oct 1856 in Freudental, Odessa, So. Russia.

SOURCES The 1812 Census for Freudental gives his age as 19, the 1816 Census by Stumpp gives it as 20.

iii Magdalena Margaretha PFAFF, born abt 29 Mar 1800 in Torschau, Batschka, Hungary; died 9 Aug 1836 in Peterstal, Odessa, So. Russia.

SOURCES The 1812 Census gives her age as 14, the 1816 Census by Stumpp gives it as 16.

iv Maria Elisabetha PFAFF, born 7 Apr 1801 in Torschau, Batschka, Hungary.

v Carolina PFAFF, born abt 1806/07 in Freudental, Odessa, So. Russia.

Generation 2

2. Johann Philipp2 PFAFF, born 21 Sep 1733 in Imsbach, Bayern, Germany, son of 4. Conrad PFAFF and 5. Anna Margretha KOLB. He married abt 1760 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Germany 3. Maria Engel CLOß, born abt 1734 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheim-Bohlanden, Germany, daughter of 6. Johannes CLOß and 7. Anna Elisabetha ORSCHIED.

Notes for Johann Philipp PFAFF

NOTE

No record could be found for the marriage of Johann Philipp and Maria Engel.

EMIGRATION TO HUNGARY

"Quellen zur Deutschen Siedlungsgeschichte in Sudosteuropa" shows the following passing through Vienna on 30 Apr 1784:

Philipp Pfaff, Bauer, 5 persons

Peter Pfaff, Bauer, 2 persons

Both were indicated as being from Morsfeld.

BAPTISM

Witnesses at his baptism were Conrad's father-in-law, Johann Philipp Kolb; Conrad's brother, Johann Philipp Pfaff, from Falkenstein; and Maria Margaretha Glos.

NOTE

It is not absolutely certain that this is the correct birth record/parents for Johann Philipp Pfaff of Moersfeld. However, Imsbach is near Moersfeld and the date of birth is appropriate for his marriage to Maria Engel Closs. So until other evidence contradicts it, it will be concluded that this is correct.

CONFIRMATION

1747 in Imsbach

OCCUPATION

In Moersfeld, Johann Philipp was a Bergmann (miner).

Notes for Maria Engel CLOß

CONFIRMATION

Maria Engel was confirmed in Moersfeld in 1749 at the age of 15. Her father was listed as Johannes Closs.

Children of Johann Philipp PFAFF and Maria Engel CLOß were as follows:

1 i Johann Peter1 PFAFF, born 22 Apr 1761 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheimbolanden, Pfalz, Germany; christened 26 Apr 1761 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheim-Bohlanden, Germany; died 5 May 1836 in Freudental, Odessa, So. Russia.

ii Johanna Maria1 PFAFF, born 9 Mar 1764 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheim-Bohlanden, Germany; died Sep 1765 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheim-Bohlanden, Germany. BAPTISM A witness at the baptism of Johanna Maria was Johann Peter Closs, mother's brother.

iii Johann Michael1 PFAFF, born 28 Aug 1766 in Mörsfeld, Kirchheim-Bohlanden, Germany. BAPTISM Witnesses at the baptism of Johann Michael were Johann Michael Wolff and his wife Maria Magdalena [Closs].

Notes for Conrad PFAFF

OCCUPATION

Schaeffer (shepherd) and Schweinehirt (pigherder)

DEATH

The death record for Conrad Pfaff states that he had been a pigherder in Imsbach for 15 years, had been married for 29 years and 4 days, that he had eleven children (four sons and seven daughters) and that two of his daughters had preceded him in death.

CHILDREN

Birth records could only be found for one son and four daughters. Confirmation and marriage records helped to fill in other names. While some of those records did not give the father's name, there appeared to be no other Pfaff families in Imsbach at the time, so it has been assumed that they were all Conrad's children. Since there is a gap in recorded births between 1733-1747, it seems logical to assume that the family may have lived elsewhere during those years. Records for both Conrad's children and his son Johann Philipp's give reference to family that live in Falkenstein, a village not far from Imsbach. It is possible that is where they lived or were from, however no records are available for Falkenstein for the years before 1818.

IMSBACH RECORDS

Records for Imsbach do not begin until 1724, so no further research is possible at this time.
