Possible Family Connection

Christian Schmierer, aus Bammental / Heidelberg-Baden, 1804, nach Worms / Od; RL: 7

I can start looking first at at Christian because  I already know that my ancesstor Ochsners family lived in Worms and probably married  within the community, therefore, my Elizabeth Schmierer might be his daughter or sister or cousin. If she is then we know she, too, migrated from Bammental / Heidelberg-Baden [Germany]. She might well have been born in this village and her parents as well as Elizabaeth might be listed  in those records.

Before I head to the Bammental records, let us look at Worms/Od. List RL:7 as mentioned

Worms / Odessa S. Russia list is, also, found in Stump and starts on page 805. I look to the entry under #7 [RL:7] and find the following:

Schmierer, Christian, 42, aus [from] Bammental /Heidelberg, seine Frau [Wife] Philippina 40, seine Kinder [Children] Elisabetha 14, Johann 13, Katharina 7, Friederika 7, Maria 6,  Ludowika 5, Michael 1 1/2

Is the daugher of Christian  and Philippina Schmierer, Elisabetha Schmierer, age 14, the same Elizabeth Schmierer who married Georg Theoblad Ochsner?  According to this list she would have been four years younger than Georg who is listed as being 18 on the same list.  That means she would have been born abt 1800

Conclusion:

Georg Theobald Ochsner

b. 1 Sept. 1796 Edenkoben, Landau, Palatinate [Germany]

d.                  Ochsner Chutor ns, Odessa, S. Russia

m. to

Elizabeth Schmierer, dau. of Christian Schmierer and Philippina _____

b. 1800 possibly Bammental / Heidelberg Baden

d.

Beresan District Odessa Newsletter, Vol 3, Issue3, Feb 1999  pps. 7-8:  THE SCHMIERER'S OF WORMS by Georg Schmierer, submitted by Tom J. Schmierer. Here are a few lines:

"In 1816 two brothers ____ Schmierer and Johann Schmierer, emigrated from Ralesnburg (?) Germany to Bessarabia.  Later, some of the offspring ...settled in Worms..."

"By 1833, there were about 8 Schmierer families in Worms.  They were mostly all rich by Russian standards."

JARH Notes: Ralesburg  can not be found on the older or new maps of German..

I searched for "R" villages around Bammental south of Heidelberg next to Leiman which was where the Roemmich family had lived before the Thrity Years War .....  because Christian Schmierer who migr. to Worms was from this village.  Could Ralsburg have been miswritten and be Heidelberg or is it Rauenberg south of Bammental. But that town is too large, so I continued to look. I found a  small village of Reilsheim ...?  Riedenberg?  How about Relsberg?  Hmmmm, this is possible.  It is north northwest of  Otterberg which is north of Kaiserlautern / Pfalz

Let's theorize for a moment.  Let's say the Schmierer family migrated eastward from Relsberg... they might end up in Bammental which is south of Heidelberg and right next to Leiman where the Roemmich / Romig family had lived for a time...

Some of the family could have been separated and might have ended up in Erdmannshausen or a birth or death occured there and they remained there for a short period of time before heading to Russia...

Let us take a look at the various routes the Germans took to travel to Russia in 1809 to 1819.... North to take passage on ships... No, I don't think they went north or had familes who settled in the Volga area.  There were some who migrated through Dresdan and eastward to Warsaw and then southward to Lemberg then to Odessa area.  Then, there was the group who ended up in Ulm and travled by boat on the Danube [Donau] River all the way to the mouth of the river by the Black Sea.  Those who left the boats did so at Wein or Budapest then went east to Lemberg to Odessa area.

A Joh. Jakob  Schmierer is listed as migr. from Erdmannshausen / Ludwigsburg in 1819.   They migr. to Alt-Elft/ Bess. . .  Could Ralesburg be a small village near Ludwigsburg?  I don't find one.

Another Schmierer migr. to Neudorf/ Od.

According to Stump p. 46 there were 22 families who migrated from Erdmannshausen / Ludwigisburg Kreis from 1804 to 1842.

So, I went to Stumpp and just looked up "R" for other colonists who had migr., just to see what I could find.

Went to Alt Elft to see if anyone else came from the Ralesburg.  The only word which came close was Ravensburg-Wu.....

Letters on family of Schmierer Family

Thursday, September 15, 2005 from James Schmierer, jimschmier@shaw.ca

I was checking the internet and came across your history of the Schmierer Family, Worms Russia.

My GreatGrand Father was Johann Schmierer, whose wife was Rosalie Wentz.

They had a son Peter Schmierer, born Worms Russia 1866, who married a Maria (Mary) Kuck ( Koch, Kock)

Peter & Mary married 1890 in a Romania Church in Kocherberg

They had 3 children, son - Wielhem Albert Schmierer born 1894 in Kuschilli, Romania

daughter - Katherine Florence born 1896 in Kuschilli, Romania

son - John born 1898 in Kuschillis, Romania

Mary was born to Welhlem Kuck 1873 Glestintz, Romania.

The family immigrated to Braddock North Dakota in 1899 before immigrating to Canada.

I am searching for next of kin to my GrandFather Peter, and my GrandMother Mary, to see if we are related to any of the Schmierer's in North Dakota.

I am hoping you can assist me in locating another branch of the family.

Thank you for taking the time to assist me in my search of other members of the family.

Yours truly,

James Schmierer

Winterrot's of Bammental, Baden, [Germany]  and  Worms/ Od.

Before I leave Worms,  I take a look at the other families  who came from Bammental.  They are: Winterrot, and probably Georg Fischer's wife Katharina who's step daughter Margareta Winterrot, age 12, is from Bammental.    Margreta married  Johan Jacob Roemmich b. 1793 Edenkoben and they are the parents of Wilhem Michael Roemmich who married Anna Maria Ochsner who is the daughter of Elizabetha, nee  Schmierer, Ochsner  .   Did you understand my thread?  I hope you did.

Meanwhile, I've discovered Margareta Winterrot, another ancestor,  and from where she had migrated, Bammental, Baden.  so, her step mother was Katharina Fischer  who must have been married to Margareta's father ______ Winterrot. She,  a widow,   remarried Georg Fischer, 37 fr. Neckartailfingen / Nuertingen-Wu.  Another child,  Sibilla, age 10,  is mentioned.  I'm not sure who's daughter Sibilla is.

This is how this research works.  One step to the names  may then lead you to other names with several side steps along the way. Most of these families are woven togather by blood or by events.  Maybe Georg Fischer's wife and  Katharina's husband died on the trekk to Russia.... They may have met.  Both needed each other and they were wed.

It'll will be interesting to see if records can be found and discover what happened.

This project is occuring, now and I'll keept you, the reader, posted on what happens and my next steps to find the answers.

See letter on Winterrots who migrated to USA from Bammental

There was a Gottlieb Winterrot who migr. to Hoffnungstal / Od; RL:7.  Gottlieb was the son-in-law to Jakob Heer from Grossbottwar / Ludwigsburg-Wu. Gottlieb and wife are listed with Heer.  His age was 32 [b. abt 1785] . His wife was Elisabeth, nee Heer, Winterrot, age 27. Maybe an uncle to Margareta Winterrot.....??  Cousin?

Heer family may be from Oberstadt who migr. to Russia, poss. Bessarabia.  See Kaye's letter.
