E-mail from Ernie Shuldhiess  Shuldhiess@aol.com

One of his letters dated 11 April 2002:

I forgot to add this, Anna Stehr was Born: 28 Jan 1886, Died: 16 Sept. 1975.  Also the correct spelling the family used, no including myself, is "Schuldheisz".  The Schuldheisz family arrived at Ellis Island March 31, 1894.  They came over on the "H.M.S. Lucania".  They arrived in Kulm Apr 2, 1894.  I don't know how much info you want, I could probably fill up about 10 pages or more...

<< To respond to your inquiry of 13 September 2002:

The Pahl family was originally at Leipzig, Bessarabia, but intermarried to nearby villages of Beresina and Paris. The Pahl and Laechelt families were from Langenwerder village in Marienwerder (near Marburg) in West Prussia previous to 1820 when they briefly re-located to southeast of Thorn (Torun) - small distance to the south - in 1820-1823 they moved to the pioneer village of Josefine of Annette-Josefine (northwest of Swiah city, northwest of Shitomir, in Volhynia. These families regrouped to Leipzig, Alt-Posttal, and Paris in 1828-1833 - all villages in Bessarabia.

In 1898, Gotthilf Pahl and wife Maria Kraft with their adult children came to North Dakota at Kulm-Merricourt-Forbes (USA) and Hanna-Drumheller, Alberta, Canada. Oldest son August Pahl to Gotthilf had two oldest sons Jacob (Jay's grandfather) and Wilhelm/Bill (Dorothy Solheim's father). August Pahl had brothers Ferdinand and Henry settle at Merricourt, Ellendale and Edgely. Ferdinand's granddaughter historian is Mrs. Janice Bertsch, Oakes, North Dakota, (daughter of Fritz Pahl). August Pahl had (7th and 8th sister siblings) Wilhelmina Pahl Pahl and Julianna Pahl Pahl - whose spouses were also Pahl cousins. Around 1910, they homesteaded at Hanna, Alberta - Finkbeiner family were neighbors at Hanna.

Dorothy Pahl Solheim's husband - Evangelical pastor and family historian is revising Pahl history book. (He formerly was chaplain at Medicine Hat.) - now pastoring a German "Evangelical German congregation near Billings, Montana. Address: Allen Solheim, Absarokee, MT 59001 USA. Phone: _____. They would be informed of any Pahl Family Reunions planned; this is your best source of information. They are at 58 years of age.

Unknown to me (Jay), Dorothy's sister Norma Pahl (Mrs. Norman Rost ..... Kulm, North Dakota 58456 USA, Tel: _______, told me about reunion coordinator in Aberdeen, South Dakota, who planned 2001 Pahl Reunion (unknown to me). These reunions are held every three or four years. (Their oldest sister is Elsie Pahl Gerhardt, just celebrated their 60th wedding year in Spokane, WA).

Due to your letter, Horst: I contacted Dean Wegenast, _____, Fargo, ND 58102 USA. Telephone: _____. (His nephew Paul Wegenast lives two blocks from my sister in Wall Street district of rural Moorhead, Minnesota - across the river from Fargo.)

Dean's brother Dennis, (who I (Jay) met serendipity at GRHS convention in  summer), is commissioning an iron cross for the Wegenast parent's graves at Edgely, ND.

Dennis Wegenast's wife Virginia (ethnic Swedish) is the Wegenast family historian. Address:_____, Mukilteo, Washington 982275 USA - Tel: ______ Virginia is very active in German research of Beresina, Bessarabia.

Horst, I hope this response will help in the fascinating inquiry for Oscar Wegenast and wife Elsa Pahl with their family history.

Sincerely,

Jay Gage, GRHC curator

<< Hi,

I am writing to you because I found your hompage about Kulm.

I live in Sweden and am doing research for my grandfathers brothers who emigrated to USA and lived Kulm in the early 1900s. They were Victor, Albert anda Willie Samuelson. They are mentioned in the supplement to the 1957 jubilee book Its the "Kulm North Dakota June 26 & 27 1967 Supplement to 1957 Jubilee book".

My question to you if you know if the 1957 book and/or the 1967  supplement is available somewhere and if its possible to buy them. I would love to see them and above all see the many pictures from the old Kulm and that of my grandfathers brothers.

My best wishes

Borje Samuelsson
