Sharon Mittelstedt  e-mail: Dmittelstedt@prodigy.net. Dated 26 April 2000 Dear Judy, I found your site when I was looking up info on Borodino, South Russia. The Schweikert and Hein names caught my eye. My husband's great grandparents came from Borodino and settled in McIntosh County, North Dakota. Their daughter, Karolina, married Christoph Hein. (Karolina is spelled with a "K" rather than a "C" in the Bible.) The following information is from the Schweigert Family Bible. Thought you might be interested in it. Karolina Schweigert was born 8 June 1890 in Borodino, South Russia. On 11 Feb. 1912 by Coldwater, ND, she married Christoph Hein. Karolina's parents are V. Christian Schweigert, born 17 Apr. 1861, Borodino, South Russia; and Ruth Schock, born 18 June 1862, Borodino, South Russia. There is a middle name for Ruth but our translator wasn't sure what it was. We are aware that Karolina and Christoph had a son. He died at a  young age...before Karolina's death. We were not aware that they had a daughter. Christian spelled Schweigert with a "g" in America. Thanks for sharing your site. Sharon Mittelstedt

Sharon Mittelstedt  e-mail: Dmittelstedt@prodigy.net. Dated 9 May 2000 I have obtained copies of the naturalization papers for Christian Schweigert and his family. They sailed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; then went to Winnipeg, and took the Soo Railroad to Portal, ND, arriving on 21 Jan. 1903. On 30 Mar. 1903, he made his intention known that he wanted to become a citizen as the initial paperwork was signed at Ashley, ND, in the District Court of McIntosh County. His wife's name on the petition for naturalization is Katharina. Thus she must have gone by her middle name that couldn't be read in the family Bible. Date and place of birth is the same. (According to one of her daughters-in-law's, she was later called Katherine.) Karolina's birth date on the document is 8 June 1890 which is the same as the family Bible. Christian took the oath of allegiance and became a citizen on 10 Mar. 1909. He was granted a homestead patent for 160 acres on 13 Dec. 1909 according to BLM records. At this point I do not know Christian's parents names. Two months ago, I did not know Christian's name. My husband's grandmother, Fredericka, (sister of Karolina) .... Coincidentally, my husband's father was born in Tarutino, Bessarabia. He immigrated to America when he was five years old.... Sharon

: "...Kermit found a death record for Christian Schweigert at St. Paul's Christian Schweigert died 1 Jan 1916 Bismarck, ND Martin R. Schock added his info the Odessa library files (pixel) on the Schock family at Borodino/ Bess.  He gives Ruth Katharina Magdalena Schock's parents as Jacob Schock and Katharina Rebecka Scmidt (John Schock is listed as her father on her death certificate.)  He also lists Christian and Katharina's son Johann Jacob Schweikert b. 17 Dec 1895, death date as 20 Jan 1896. Our son Chad Mittelstedt and his wife Kori (Uffelman) had a baby girl, Taylor Rae Mittelstedt......" Sharon Dated 15 Jan 2002

NOTES:

Dates:  There is often a different birth dates noted for each person.  One must remember the dates in Russia before 1918 were based on the Old Calendar [OS.]and were 12 to 13 days behind the New Calendar  [NS] which was used by Europe and USA.  Example, if a person was born in Borodino on 1 Jan 1818 the date in Europe or USA would have been 12  Jan. 1818.  Many of the Schweikerts adapted the new calendar dates here in the USA/Canada.....  Confusion has resulted.  More confusion occurs when the birth dates are confused with baptism dates, therefore, the earlier date is usually the date of birth and the later date found in church records is often the date of baptism. Name Change:  Most of the Schweikerts changed the "k" to a "g" turning the name to Schweigert here in the USA and Canada.
