##Did the  Kosel / Koschel / Koschell family take the name of the village/ town where they  could have lived in earlier times. ? There is a Kusel / Cusel which is in the Kusel Dist. in Rhineland-Palatinate.   Interestingly there is the Castle of Lichtenberg.  Our Koschel did m. a Christina Licht.  Something to check.  The area holds Celtic graves from the Iron Age.   It was called St. Bishop Remigius land between 575 and 590.  Remigius had baptized Clovis I.  It was under the Frankish rule until it  ["curtis" = estate] was sold or donated or taken by the Imperial family and was part of Kaiseslautern's domain. In 1125 the abby which was in Kussel was stripped of it's importance by the Archbishopric of Reims.  A count of Nahegau Gerlach was hired as a "Vogt" (Knightly guard)..  But the three castles of  Veldenz, Lichtenberg and Michelsburg on the Remigiusberg struggled for the power of the area.  The towns built moats, walls, towers and games in the late 1300s.  Also interested in the Reims area was the Dukes of Zweibruecken, who had risen from being Counts of Palatine.  In 1552 the area was sold to Zweibruecken for 8,500 Rheinish gilders.  Three times the town was struck with tragedy by the Plague in the 1500s.  During the Thirty Years' War troops of the Imperial army under General Matthias Gallas killed more than half of the town people and then burned down the town.  It took forty years to rebuild.  Then along came the French King Louis XIV's soldiers during the Franco-Dutch War and in 1675 and 1677  most of the down was burnt down.  During the French Revolution the French burned down the town for the third time in 1794...  All the families had been warned and had left accept for a few townsman whom they held as hostages.  The town lay in the Dept. of Sarre during this time.  In 1818 the town was given to the Bavarian Rhein District.
