Family History

Laurentius Roemich, age 16,  attended the Old University of Heidelberg in 1618 to 1619.  Evidence is as follows:
"...Laurentius Roemich (alias Remichius) Neostadienis [from Neustadt) has a fine entry in "Die Matrikel der Universitaet"...., " wrote Dr. Ursula Perkow, the Librarian of the University of Heidelberg on 10 Nov, 2000. She went on to talk about  the place where I could find the entry on p. 292 in "bearb. u. hrsg v. Gustav Toepke , vol II (1886), No. 171 which talks about, "...matriculated 2 Nov 1619 (he and another student 'non Lurarunt ob aetatem'- they didn't swear because of their age); and annotation says that he had become a baccalarius artium 27 Aug 1619, and 'receptus 17 Oct 1619 and stipendium Hirschornense collegij Casimirani, quo hactenus fruitus est Jacobus Bawer' (he received a study grant, founded by the knight Friedrich von Hirschhorn, up to that time given to Jacobus Bawer)."
See photographs of the Old University of Heidelberg.
From what I have been lead to understand, Laurentius Roemich joined the army and fought in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), however, this information may not be accurate.

Soldiers in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648)

Thirty Years War

I assume  because our ancestor Laurentius Roemich was an educated man,  he entered the army as an officer.  There should be some records to find, maybe, in Neustadt  a. d. Haardt und  a. d. Winstrasse [on the Haaardt River and the WineRoad ] in Palatinate [Germany]. Afterwards, he migrated to a small village of Edenkoben / Landau, Palainate which is south of Neustadt a. d. Haardt

Marriage

It is not known  at this time Catharina's last name.

A History of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse by the Harrdt Mountains

It was and still is a major distribution center of the region's wines and holds each Oct the Deutsches Weinlese-Fest [Wine Festival].

Presently, the institute of Mussbach owns the Pfalz's oldest wine estate founded in the 8th century. It is called Johannitergut.

There are ruins of a 700 year old Winzingen fortress....

The Hambacher Castle ruins is somewhat of a national shrine because here is where the first black, red and yellow flag was raised in 1832 as they declared  "democracy in Germany"....

German Wine Road [Deutsche Weinstrasse]

Running parallel of the Haardt Mt. foothills is a stretch of about 50 miles of grape vines and connecting these vineyards is a road known as the German Wine Road [Deutsche Weinstrasse]. The original vines were planted by the Romans before c.300 AD..  In 834 A.D. the Treaty of Verdun gave Louis the German Pfalz [Palatinate] who gave the duty of the Palatines to supply Communion wine for the church.

E-mail from Alain on 6 Feb 2010:

Hi!

My great-grabd-mothher (1826-1908) had name: Caroline Roemmich.  Born in Bischwiller, she married Charles Neidhlardt, my great-grand-father.

A son of Johannes Roemmich and Anna-Elisabeth Liebesberger, Philipp Jacob Roemmich (b. 1730) moved from Edenkoben to Bischwiller (Alsace-France) and married Anna-Maria Heilmann (11. Nov. 1765)

On your family-tree I don't see Phillipp-Jacob, issued from the Gen. 9.

It is very credible that we have some common gen.!

ery fascinating!

Best regards,

lain Neidhardt.

Interesting Note about Bischwiller & Pres. Obama:

One of Presidient Barack Obama's  Swiss ancestors, Christian Goodnight (b. Christian Gutknecht) was born and then migr. from Bischwiller to America in the mid-1700s.  See article CHRISTIAN GUTKNECHT-GOODNIGHT, "The dark and bloody ground" by Scott Forneck written 9 Sept 2007.
