My best information on the Rath family of Bessarabia is that they originated  in Pfalzgrafenweiler, Freudenstadt, Wuerttemberg. If they were typical emigres from that region to Bessarabia, they would have left Pfalzgrafenweiler about 1803, first going to "Prussian" Poland. They would have been responding to an offer of free land by the King of Prussia, who was trying to re-populate [with Germans] the portion of Poland that he received in 1795, when that country was partitioned between Prussia, Russia and Austria-Hungary. Many families from Wuerttemberg and Baden joined this emigration in 1803. Most of them arrived in the Lodz-Warsaw region in 1804. I know of several families who came from Baden/Wue that settled in "Prussian" Poland villages such as, Groembach, Koenigsbach, Erdmannsweiler, Ilvesheim and many other nearby German populated villages.

They remained in "Prussian" Poland, even after the King of Prussian lost the area back to the Poles, when the Russians helped them establish the Duchy of Warsaw about 1806. But by 1812, after being plundered by Napoleon, both on his way to and from Moscow, and being "taxed" [high rents, arbitrary evictions, etc.] severely by the Polish nobility, who had reclaimed their lands in 1806, they were ready to "go to greener pastures."

When the Tsar of Russia [Alexander] offered free land and other benefits, primarily to Germans then living in Polish areas, if they would come to Bessarabia, which he had just taken from the Turks, these German colonists decided these were the "greener pastures" they were seeking. So in 1814-16 many of these families left "Prussian" Poland for Bessarabia. I would guess that is when the Rath family entered Bessarabia.

You probably have a lot of genealogy to do before you want to tackle the Rath ancestry in Germany. But if you can find film in the LDS Family History

Library for Pfalzgrafenweiler, dating about 1800-1805, it is very likely that one or more of these records will indicate that one of the Rath families "ausgewandert nach Polen 1803", or in English--"emigrated to Poland 1803."

My wife's Rath ancestor moved from Pfalzgrafenweiler to Egenhausen, Wuerttemberg, probably about 1718. He was Georg Rath, the son of Jerg [Georg] Rath, born abt 1688 in Pfalzgrafenweiler [he died 26 Mar 1748 in Egenhausen]. On 14 Jun 1718, he married Rosina Heitzmann in Egenhausen. Rosina was born 19 Sep 1683 in Egenhausen [she died 6 Jan 1765]. Their daughter, Rosina Rath [b 22 Aug 1727, d 12 Jan 1772 Egenhausen], married Johannes Waltz on 20 Oct 1750in Egenhausen.

Rosina and Johannes Waltz's daughter, Anna Waltz [b 31 Dec 1760 Egenhausen], married 21 Apr 1783 to Johannes Brenner of Egenhausen. This couple emigrated to Prussian Poland in 1803; and probably in 1814-1816 to Alt-Elft, Bessarabia. Their daughter, Christina Brenner [born 30 Jul 1802 Egenhausen; died 16 Oct 1866 Neu-Elft], married 24 Nov 1820 in Alt-Elft to Philipp Jacob Seefried [he was born in Koenigsbach, Baden, emigrated 1803 to Koenigsbach, Poland, then in 1814-1816 to Alt-Elft]. They are my wife's great great grandparents.

Tom Stangl is right on the money here. The _Heimatbuch Wittenberg_ [Bessarabia] was compiled and edited by Paul Rath and Klara Bollinger and has at least eleven pages of Rath family information.

On p. 395 it says that the Rath family came from Pfalzgrafenweiler, Wuerttemberg, moving to Poland in March 1799. According to this source, the Rath family gave its name to the colony of Rathenfeld in Posen.

The first Rath mentioned in the Heimatbuch is Christian Rath, born 16 October 1766 in Pfalzgrafenweiler. He married Anna Maria Bauer on 20 November 1787. She was born in the nearby village of Spielberg, Wuerttemberg. She died 19 September 1811 in Rathenfeld, Posen. Christian Rath married Margaretha Kunzin on 6 October 1812.

Nine children are listed for his first marriage and one for the second. Christian Rath was a shovel maker and died 14 September 1834 in Kulm, Bessarabia.

I did have a rough outline of Grandma's siblings that one of her nephews did a number of years ago. I was surprised by the information I found on your web page regarding Andreas Reule, and kept it and my own family information close at hand as I went digging.

I have found numerous records and have put together the information as best as I could. I'm not sure you are interested in correcting the information, however, I will provide it to you and let you make the decision. The following information was gleaned from Ellis Island records, US census information cemetary records and other vital statistic information available.

By the by, my grandmother is Leontine (Dena) Reule Olson Tenney (and she never knew her name was Leontine until she was almost 60 years old!) I am still looking for information regarding Rosina Jans and am almost certain that the secrets lie in the Alysowak records. Also of interest (and making it more difficult to find the records), some of the children appear to have changed the spelling of the last name to Reile (Rudulph and Gottfried) and the records at Ellis Island also had this spelling for the family name.

Anyway, here is a more accurate account of Andreas' children:
