button Ratzeburg.  Presently in Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg, Schleswig-Holstein.  Formerly bishopric.  Secularized under Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1648.  Passed to Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1701 to 1934.  1869 the Duchy was given it's own Landtag but opposition from the peasants prevented it from occurring until 1906.  There were revisions since....

button Ravensburg.  Presently in Baden-Wuerttemberg.  Formerly Reiohsstadt.  Founded in 1098... and was one of the seats of the Welf family.  It is thought that the powerful Duke of Saxony and Bavaria Henry the Lion was born here ... 1129... Member of the Catholic corpus at the Peace of Westphalia (1648).  Since the Reformation, their government offices were divided between Protestants and Catholics.  In 1802 the city fell to Bavaria and after 1810 to Wuerttemberg... button Recklinghausen (Rechenhausen).  Presently in Nordrhein-Westfalen.  Formerly prelate nullius.  Early years it was royal a stronghold for the Carolingian families... The abbey of Essen exercised sovereignty until the territory was mortgaged to the Herren von Gemen and their descendants the Counts von Schaumburg.  1794 the territory became a possession of Kurkoeln (Electoral Cologne).  In 1802 it became the Dukes von Arenberg. 1811 passed to Grafschaft Berg.  1815 the territory passed to Prussia (Hohenzollern).

button Reckum (Reckheim).  Presently Rekheim bei Tongern, Belgium.  Formerly Grafschaft.  Member of the Westfaelische Grafenkolleg.  Represented by the Counts von Aspremont after 1623.

button Regensburg (Ratisbon).  Presently in Regierungsbezirk Oberpfalz, Bayern (Bavaria).  Formerly Reichsstadt and bishopric. The area dates back to a Keltic settlement of Radasbona and then in A.D. 77 the Romans set up camp.  In 179 the huge legionary camp of Castra Regina was established by Marcus Auelius.  6th c. it was the residence of the Dukes of Bavaria of the Agilolfing line.... in 788 Charlemagne founded the bishopric and became residence of the Carolingian rulers.  13th c. became a free Imperial city in 1245... It started to decline in wealth as Augsburg and Nuremberg rose in success.... Associated with Herrschaft Donaustauf.  The Reichsstadt was represented by Hessen-Darmstadt in the Protestant corpus at the Peace of Westphalia (1648).  The bishopric was represented by Osnabrueck in the Catholic corpus. 1748  it's territories passed to the Princes von Thurn and Taxis. The bishopric was secularized in 1803 and territory passed to Elector of Mainz Karl von Dalberg.... 1809 the city was occupied by French... 1810 became united with Bavaria.....

button Regenstein.  Presently n. [1 1/4 mile fr ] Blankenburg, Saxony-Anhalt.  Formerly German in  Bezirk Magdenburg,  Democratic Republic.  Formerly Grafschaft.  Brandenburg represented this area after 1670.  It would then become part of Prussia in 1701 and remain a Prussian enclave which belonged to Braunschweig.

button Reichenau. Presently an island in Lake Constance and part of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Formerly prelate nullius.  Territory merged with the bishopric of Konstanz and lost it Recihstag vote in 1548.  Not until 1737 did it become free of the bishopric.  1803 was secularized.

button Reichsberg and Wiesentheid.  Presently in Nordrhein-Westfalen.  Formerly Grafschaft.  Has been represented by the family of von Nesselrode since 1698....  

button Reifferscheid.  Presently in Kreis Ahrweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz.  Formerly Grafschaft. Occupied by French from 1794 to 1814. The ruling family of Salm-Reifferscheid was Catholic. May have been des. of  Dukes of Limburg.

button Reipoltskirchen.  Presently in Kreis Kusel, Rheinland-Pfalz.  Formerly Herrschaft who was a tenancy-in-chief of the Kaiser [Hohenzollern]  1792-1801.  See Hohenfels and Reipolskirchen

button Reuss and Plauen.  Presently in Thuringia....  Formerly in the German Democratic Republic.  Formerly Grafschaft.  The estates associated with them were:  Burg, Doelau, Saalburg Schleiz, Koestritz, Lonbenstein,  and Ebersdorf.  Member of the Wetterauische Grafenkolleg.  The rulers were Princes von Reuss who were Lutherans.  There were two principalities and branches of Reuss.  The senior line was Reuss-Greiz and the junior line was Reuss-Gera.  Some properties were held jointly by as many as 12 subbranches of this dynasty.  The Hereditary Prince Heinrich XLV died in 1945...  [See Luxemburg, House of Nassau-Weilburg: Louise b. 1765, dau. of Charles Christian, Prince of Nassau-Weilburg, m. Henry XIII, Prince Reuss of Greiz b. 1747]

button Reutlingen.  Presently in Baden-Wuerttemberg  on the Echaz River.  Founded in 11 c. and became a town known for it's textiles and tanneries.  The road Lederstrasse leads NW to the Tuebingen Gate .... . Formerly Reichsstadt.  Represented by Esslingen in the Protestant corpus  at the Peace of Westphalia (1648).  In 1803 the territory fell to Wuerttemberg.

button Rheineck.  Near Brohl, Kreis Ahrweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz.  Formerly Grafschaft.  Was represented by the family von Sinzendorf  since 1654.

button Rheda, Counts of (von).  See Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda.  Presently SW fr.. Muenster, North Rhine-Westphalia.  There is a moated Schloss which was owned by Fuersen von Bentheim - Tecklenburg - Rheda ...

button Rheingrafen [Counts of Rhine].  They were  Catholic and members of the Wetterauische Grafenkolleg.  The Rheingrafen had fortresses and estates in the Nahe River area. [The Nahe River  Valley is in Rhineland-Palatinate. Along it's banks are Idar-Oberstein, Bad Muenster am Stein and Eberburg birthplace of the Knight Franz von Sickingen.] They inherited the estates of the Wildgrafen which were Dhaun, Kyrburg bie Kirn.  They styled themselves the Wild and Rheingrafen after this inheiritance. Family is connected to Salm-Kyrburg, a branch of the Salm dynasty.  

button Riddagshausen.  Presently in the city of Braunschweig, Niedersachsen.  Formerly a prelate nulius.  After 1568 it was Protestant and a Landstand of Braunschweig-Wolfenbuettel....

button Rieneck.  Presently in Kreis Gemuenden, Unterfranken, Bayern (Bavaria).  Formerly Grafshaft. Was a Fraenkische Grafenkolleg member.... After 1674  was represented by the family von Nostitz.

button Rietberg.  Presently in Kreis Wiedenbrueck, Nordrhein-Westfalen.  Formerly Grafschaft. Member of the Westfaelische Grafenkolleg. The family of von Kakunitz represented this territory since 1692.  1807 the territory merged to the Kingdom of Westphalia.  After 1815 became Prussian [Hohenzollern] territory.

button Rockenhausen.  Presently  in  Kreis Gemeiden n. Kirchhein-Bolanden...  or  May have had association with Rockenhausen n. Kaiserlautern.  Both are in Rhineland-Pfalz (Palatinate).  See Roemig and Pfaff family connections.   Records are not clear to which town the prelate nulius status belonged......

button Roedelheim.  Formerly Grafschaft.  Ruling family was  Lutheran and the von Solms-Roedelheim-Assenhein.  See Wetterauische Grafenkolleg (Solms-Roedelhein).  

button Roenis.  See Brandenstein-Roenis.

button Rogendorf.  Presently Austrian territory and has been since 1600.  Was formerly  Grafschaft.

button Roggenburg.  Presently in Kreis Neu-Ulm, Schwaben, Bayern (Bavaria).  Formerly prelate nulius.  There were four Amtern when the territory passed to Bavaria in 1803.

button Rosenberg, Counts of (von).  The  family of Ursin  (Orsini) von Rosenberg lineage is not clear and may not be connected to the Orsini family of Italy.  However, the lineage of Rosenberg is Catholic and known to have originated in Carinthia, Austria.  See Ursin von Rosenberg.

button Rosheim.  Presently in Department of Bas-Rhin, France and has been since 1648.  Formerly Reichsstadt.

button Roth.  It's location is either in  Bayern or  known as Muenchenroth in  ____.  It was a prelate nullius.

button Rothenburg ob der Tauber [on the Tauber River].  Presently in Mittelfranken, Bayern (Bavaria).  Formerly Reichsstadt.  Member of the Protestant corpus at the Peace of Westphalia.  And what a delightful city it is since it has been preserved and reconstructed to show the modern world what a town in a German state was like that was built before and after the Thirty Years War.  It rose into importance under the Hohenstaufen House and it's old castle built in the 12 th c. which fell to ruin in an earthquake in 1356...  It had become a free city in the 12th c.... It became Protestant during the Reformation... then escaped destruction when the city joined Gustavus Adophus during the Thirty Years War...  The French, under Gen. Tilly,  occupied the city.  Then, as the old saying  goes,  the city slept and when it woke there were 1.5 million tourists visiting each year through it's gates...

To the SE is the ruins of Roman Baths that were part of the settlement known as Arae Flavie and is thought to date to the reign of Trajan...... 

button Rottmuenster.  Presently located in _______  Possibly near Rott  which was near Hunnspach /  n. Weissenburg, Alsace [El],, France.  The area switched back and forth between Germany and France many times.....  See the history of Alsace (Elase).  A convent...  See Rott Family.

button Rottweil.  Presently in Baden-Wuerttemberg and is to the right of the Necker River....  Formerly Reichsstadt. Early Roman settlement known as Arae Flaviae 74 BC and has numerous remains still to be seen... Founded by Konrad von Zaehringen [Duke of Baden] in 1140... His lineage can be found in the Dukes of Teck (ext. 1439)... His grandfather was Berchtold I, Duke of Carinthia and Mgv. of Verona d. 1078 and through his son Hermann his des. became Mgv. of Hachberg and Sausenberg (ext 1503) and Henry V, Duke of Austria and through his grandson Rudolph IV came the house of Baden Baden and Baden-Durlach.( Berthold,  Mgv. of Baden  who d. in 1963). Town holds one of the oldest churches in Baden-Wuerttemberg....  Free city from 1268 to 1463 when the French occupied it.... Member of the Catholic corpus at the Peace of Westphalia (1648). One of the known festivals includes the Shrovetide Fools' Dance.....  

button Runkel.  Presently in Oberlahnkreis, Hessen.  The estates to which it  was associated were the Herrschaften Westerwald and Westerburg.  The family of Wied-Runkel were Protestant rulers. See Wied and Runkel.  Charles Louis, Prince of Wied-Runkel b. 1763 m. Caroline b. 1770, dau. of Charles Christian, Prince of Nassau-Weilburg and Caroline, dau. of William IV, Prince of Orange.... 

button Ruppin.  Presently in  ______  Formerly in the German Democratic Republic.  Formerly Herrschaft.  In 1524 the Reichstag vote was cancelled.  From 1816 to 1952 it was a Lankreis in Brandenburg......
